History & Timeline
Over six decades of chess excellence — from 1962 to today.
ChessVault (The Chess Vault) was founded in 1962 by Emine Yıldız in Mersin, Turkey. What began as an exclusive club for serious chess players has grown into a world-renowned chess association — offering live broadcasts, elite training, international tournaments, and a research-driven approach to chess coaching. Today, under the leadership of Dr. Selin Karaca, ChessVault continues to push the boundaries of what a chess organization can be.
The Chess Vault is Founded
Emine Yıldız, a Turkish entrepreneur and chess visionary, establishes The Chess Vault in Mersin, Turkey as an exclusive club for serious chess players. In an era when few women held leadership roles in Turkish society, Emine broke social barriers to pursue her passion for chess at the highest level.
First Structured Training Program
ChessVault launches its first formalized training curriculum, attracting talented players from across southern Turkey. The program combines traditional Ottoman chess pedagogy with modern European opening theory, setting the foundation for the elite coaching model that defines the organization today.
European Partnerships Begin
Under Emine Yıldız's leadership, The Chess Vault formalizes relationships with chess schools and federations in Yugoslavia, Germany, and France. International masters visit Mersin for residencies, elevating the quality of instruction and giving Turkish players exposure to world-class competition.
Youth Scholarship Program
Emine Yıldız personally sponsors scholarships for promising Turkish youth, covering travel, coaching, and tournament entry fees. This initiative produces several nationally ranked juniors and establishes ChessVault's reputation as a talent pipeline for Turkish chess.
Mediterranean Chess Exchange
ChessVault hosts its first major international event — the Mediterranean Chess Exchange — bringing players from Greece, Lebanon, Egypt, and Israel to Mersin for a week of round-robin competition and seminars. The event cements the organization's role as a cultural bridge in the region.
Women's Chess Initiative
Inspired by Emine's own path-breaking career, ChessVault begins a dedicated women's chess program. The initiative provides mentorship and competitive opportunities for female players across Turkey, years before many federations had comparable programs.
National Recognition
The Turkish Chess Federation formally recognizes ChessVault as a contributing partner organization. Multiple ChessVault-trained players earn FIDE titles, and the organization is increasingly seen as a national asset for chess development.
Rapid & Blitz Seminars
ChessVault pioneers rapid-format training sessions in Turkey, reflecting the growing international interest in faster time controls. Monthly seminars on clock management and practical endgames attract players from across the country.
Digital Exploration Begins
ChessVault begins experimenting with online chess tools and digital record-keeping. Game archives are digitized for the first time, preserving decades of organizational history and making annotated games accessible to a broader audience.
Passing of Emine Yıldız — Dr. Selin Karaca Takes Over
After the passing of founder Emine Yıldız, Dr. Selin Karaca assumes leadership. A former national chess player who trained under Emine and holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science with a focus on game-based learning, Dr. Karaca honors the organization's legacy while charting a modern, research-driven course for its future.
Research-Driven Training Model
Dr. Karaca introduces cognitive science principles into ChessVault's coaching methodology, integrating pattern recognition exercises, decision fatigue management, and psychological preparation into the curriculum. The approach is years ahead of mainstream adoption in chess coaching.
50th Anniversary & Grand Celebration
ChessVault celebrates its 50th anniversary with a gala event in Mersin, attended by titled players, coaching alumni, and chess officials from across the region. A commemorative tournament — the Emine Yıldız Memorial — is held in the founder's honor.
International Coaching Staff Assembled
ChessVault assembles its current international coaching roster: GM Viktor Ivanković (Croatia), WGM Leyla Demir (Turkey), FM Rashid Al-Zayani (Qatar), IM Aydin Şener (Turkey), and Dr. Ela Tan (performance psychology). This diverse team brings world-class expertise spanning classical, rapid, and blitz chess.
Middle East & European Expansion
ChessVault expands its reach, formalizing training partnerships with chess organizations in Qatar, Croatia, and several European countries. The organization begins hosting international training camps and sending delegations to overseas tournaments.
Master's Pathway Program
IM Aydin Şener launches the Master's Pathway program for players on the brink of FIDE titles. The structured curriculum focuses on advanced preparation, competitive psychology, and tournament strategy, producing multiple title-norm performances.
The Grand Vault Invitational Inaugurated
ChessVault launches The Grand Vault Invitational, an annual closed invitational tournament featuring titled players. The event quickly becomes a highlight of the organization's calendar and a showcase for Turkish chess talent.
